NAFTA SPREADING

The push for free trade that began with NAFTA continues as a matter of U.S. policy. Since NAFTA, the United States has concluded free trade agreements with Jordan, Chile and Singapore. Furthermore, late last year the Bush administration reached a free trade agreement with four Central America countries—El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua—called the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Since that time, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic have been integrated into CAFTA.

The U.S. government has also targeted free trade agreements with Morocco, Australia, Bahrain and the Southern African Customs Union (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland).
